(8/20) Weston's Noggin'

Weston loves to play football......

Each day after school, a group of boys meet in the park behind the clubhouse and play till dark...

There are boys of all ages, from 7 on up through high school.....the older boys do a pretty good job of looking out for the younger boys and the games usually go pretty smoothly. Weston is a pretty tough kid and doesn't mind the getting knocked around a little...he actually enjoys the rough-housing....

On Tuesday...they boys were playing as usual (I was watching as usual...I'm the only mom who's still a little paranoid about turning him loose so I watch from the car while he plays football and Avery plays at the park) I looked away for a minute, looked back and he was on the ground. I watched and he stayed down for quite a while...I figured he didn't want his Mom streaking across the field so I waited...but it was quite a while. He got up...did one more play then I flagged him in...he'd been playing for 1 1/2 hours and it was dinner time.

He got in the car and started crying...and asking questions....When did we come here? Did I walk? What are these mints for? Over and over the same questions in the same tone of voice which was pretty scary to hear. Doug was there when we got home...we tucked Weston under a blanket and googled concussion. Since many of the symptoms listed were ones he was exhibiting...we took him to a 24 hour ER and....a concussion!!!
Apparently, he'd been swung around and thrown to the ground...hard enough to cause a concussion. He stayed home from school yesterday...enjoyed a bit of "the celebrity life" from the boys in our neighborhood who keep asking asking him questions about his injury....and now he's ready to do it all over again. Now comes the hard part...keeping this boy from all physical activity, per doctors orders, for the next 14 days...that's gonna be a long 2 weeks people.
