(8/20) A trip to Clear Creek...

Last week, I went with the 4th grade class on their field trip to Clear Creek. This trip was originally scheduled in December (I know, a 2 mile hike scheduled for December) but was rescheduled due to....extremely cold weather...in December...who'd have thunk it!! March proved to be perfect...the weather was 70 degrees with lots of sunshine. We started off with a quick talk from one of the volunteers...a list of the rules and a list of things we needed to look for on our hike.

We set off...full of energy and ready to look for things like....

Dog tracks...different from cat tracks because you can see the marks from the claws...

A cottonwood tree blooming among the bare branches....

Coyote poop (scat, as they called it)...easy to recognize because it's full of hair/fur from all the critters they've eaten. We saw way to much of this along the trail.....

and finally, a spider web...no spiders were to be found, thank goodness.

Then, they had to sit quietly around a wetlands area and observe...carefully recording those observations in their science journals (or, in Weston's case, on a scrap of paper since he had forgotten his journal)

Finally, a treck back to the bus in time to load up and head home. I always enjoy going with the kids on their field trips...it's a great way to learn about this area. Both trips I've gone on, here and to Sharkarosa, are places I'd like to visit again as a family.
